The Philistines were bearing down hard on the Israelites.  Saul’s three sons were killed and Saul was wounded.  Fearful of how the Philistines might torture and torment him if captured, he commanded his armor bearer to kill him.  The armor bearer refused so Saul fell on his own sword and the his armor bearer did the same.  The Israelites abandoned their cities in fear after this and the Philistines came and occupied them.

David and his men head back home since Achish does not want them to fight with him.  When they arrive they found all of their wives, children and possessions were gone!  There was so much despair and anguish that some of the men even  blamed David and desired to kill him.  But David called on the Lord and asked what they should do.  The Lord instructs him to go after the looters and they will recover all!

Achish has commanded David to go into battle with the Philistines against Israel.  He’s been serving Achish for a few years and he’s led him to believe that he has fully defected from Israel to the Philistine side.
I wonder at this moment, as David is marching with Achish and the other soldiers what David must be thinking!  How am I going to get out of this?  Am I going to turn on Philistines before the battle?  right as it starts?  or am I going to slay my own people to keep his honor?  I imagine he’s all torn up from worry and probably not sleeping very well.

Once again we find Saul seeking David to kill him.  And once again, we find David choosing to honor God over taking revenge against Saul.  He is able to go into the camp where Saul is sleeping, take his spear and jug of water without Saul or any of his guards awakening!

David had been protecting Nabal’s land and workers while they were shearing sheep.  He sent some of his men to ask for food.  Now, the custom of this time required that Nabal feed these travelers but he should’ve been happy to do it because of the protection David had provided to his men.  However, he was rude and denied them! In anger, David stormed away ready to punish him.  Luckily, Abigail, Nabal’s wife, interceded with words of wisdom.  She brought food, apologized for her husband’s poor behavior and then asked David to not seek vengeance.  He listened to this wise counsel and did not kill any of Nabal’s men.  By heeding this wisdom presented to him, he remained blameless.

Saul had been on the hunt seeking to find David for the sole purpose of  killing him.  In this chapter, David and his men are hiding out in a cave in En Gedi.  Saul heard it and goes there with 3,000 soldiers to look for him.  Even though David’s band of men was small, Saul still felt the need to take 3,000 men!  This shows that he realized David’s strength, which was really God’s power through David.

David is still hiding from Saul, but he is also still defending the Israelites when needing.  (Kind of sounds a little like the story of Robin Hood to me.)  In the town of Keilah the Philistines are robbing the Israelite threshing floors.  David inquires of the Lord if he should go to defend them.   Wow!  He doesn’t just jump ahead to do what appears right, he asks the Lord first!
